Tysk-amerikansk varietésångerska och filmskådespelerska, ofta i "femme-fatale" roller. Född som Maria Magdalene von Losch i Schöneberg, Berlin. Hade redan som liten lärt sig läsa och räkna lite varför hom började skolan redan som 6-åring och dessutom i andra klass. Började artistkarriären som violinvirtuos men fick en seninflamation och gick över till skådespelarbanan. Hon började vid teatern efter en lyckad anställningsintervju hos Max Reinhardt vid Deutsches Theater och fick sedan mindre filmroller. Hon medverkade i 13 stumfilmer men hennes stora genombrott kom i filmen "Blå ängeln" (1930) mot den tyske skådespelaren Emil Jannings. Hon har även framträtt som estradsångerska.
