En av världens mest framgångsrika kompositörer och textförfattare. Född i Sibirien som Israel Baline och yngst av åtta syskon. Fadern var rabbin och utvandrade med familjen till USA 1893. Efter några år i USA dog fadern och Israel fick börja bidraga till familjens försörjning, bl.a. med att sälja tidningar. Som 14-åring började han sjunga på gatorna och fick så småningom arbete som sjungande kypare på ett café i New York's Chinatown. Det var där som han skrev sin första sång " Marie from sunny Italy". Den blev utgiven och kompositören Ted Snyder fick se den den och anställde Irving i sitt företag.
